Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Architecture is energy. Lines drawn on paper to represent architectural intentions also imply decades and sometimes centuries of associated energy and material flows. Form Follows Energy is about the relationship between energy and the form of our built environment. It examines the optimisation of energy flows in building and urban design and the implications for form and configuration. It speaks to both architectural and engineering audiences and offers for the first time a truly interdisciplinary overview on the subject, explaining the complex relationships between energy and architecture in an easy to follow manner and using simple diagrams to show how energy design strategies can be used to maximize the energy performance of our built environment, while at the same time leading to new aesthetic qualities and radically new forms in architecture and urban design. Case studies are used to illustrate the theory. The books philosophy is based on the guiding principles underlying nearly 30 years work in practice, research and teaching. It is relatively easy to make something simple seem complicated. To make a complex topic seem simple and easily understandable is far more of a challenge and this is the aim of this book.

Abstract

If you think innovation comes primarily from the business world...If you think city making can only be done by public administrations...If you think sustainability is for tree huggers...Think again. The future is the result of what we all create together. Change makers are the innovators of our time. Change the World City by City shines a light on their work by focusing on transition initiatives in five European cities. These initiatives aim to make the world a better place by changing the way we think, act and co-operate.At first glance, their transformative capacity might be tiny in a world dominated by large-scale corporations and powerful vested interests. Yet when you dive deeper, you will discover that making the future happens organically, everywhere, all the time, that urban innovation does not thrive on competition but on collaboration and that the work to make this world a better place starts with ourselves and not with others.Bron: https://www.lannoocampus.be/nl/change-world-city-city

Abstract

Health and environmental compatibility are key topics in contemporary society. The book shows how the built environment can be aesthetically pleasing, modern and, at the same time, healthy and environmentally friendly. It makes the link between architecture as a design task and a building biology approach to design. Building biology teaches us about the holistic interaction between people and their built environment. It combines building culture with ecology and disciplines such as chemistry, biology, geology, and psychology. Using the building of the Institute of Building Biology + Sustainability (IBN) as a model, building biology criteria and approaches are explained in detail. Numerous additional current projects illustrate how these are implemented in responsible, healthy, and hence sustainable architecture.

Abstract

"Soft Living Architecture explores the invention of new architectures based on living processes. It crafts a unique intersection between two fast-developing disciplines: biomimicry and biodesign in architecture, and bioinformatics and natural computing in the natural sciences. This is the first book to examine both the theory and methodology of architecture and design working directly with the natural world. It explores a range of approaches from the use of life-like systems in building design to the employment of actual growing and living cell and tissue cultures as architectural materials - creating architecture that can change, learn and grow with us. The use of 'living architecture' is cutting-edge and speculative, yet it is also inspiring a growing number of designers worldwide to adopt alternative perspectives on sustainability and environmental design. The book examines the ethical and theoretical issues arising alongside case-studies of experimental practice, to explore what we mean by 'natural' in the Anthropocene, and raise deep questions about the nature of design and the design of nature. This provocative and at times controversial book shows why it will become ever more necessary to embrace living processes in architecture if we are to thrive in a sustainable future."--Provided by publisher.

Abstract

This illustrated book gives a comprehensive view of _ contemporary ideas, innovations and emerging attitudes to sustainability that emanated from the MIT symposium. 16 leading contributors with demonstrable track records in architectural practice, engineering and academia give their insights into the way we need to think about architecture in the future in order to work with the environment - instead of against it. Supported by details that relate to specific design or research projects, they clearly suggest a variety of potential directions fo follow to bring environmentalism into the mainstream of architectural discourse. The edited summary of twelve key presentations at an International Design Symposium held at MIT. This book presents an important collection of contributions from key designers with a track record in the field of environmentally conscious buildings. Their contributions respond to a need for a more holistic view on environmentalism, focusing on cultural and social levels as well as technical issues to broaden the debate on sustainable architecture. This book will appeal to a wide range of professionals in the built environment, increasingly concerned with sustainable design.
